    Project Background:

Among the total amount of children-orphans and children, deprived of parental care (103 thousand in compliance with the officials statistic data of Ukraine), 12-15 thousand of children are those, whose parents left them at birth.

The majority of parents who abandon their children are under aged.

The idea of the project was to repair and equip a comfortable premise for 8 persons in the city of Chernigiv, which is now used as Mother and Baby Unit. Parents stay in the Unit only when they continue their education and at the same time take care of their children.

While parents are absent (classes at school, preparation of home assignments, participation in professional growth courses), the Unit staff  assists in looking after their children. At the same time parents are responsible for self-care: cleaning, cooking, taking care of other children.

This helps them to gain the independent living skills. A social worker works with an under aged mother as well as with a biological father of a child in order to reintegrate the mother to a home environment.

After the end of the Project the Unit is financed from the state budget.
