Children's Charity Warns that Elton John's Plans to Adopt from Ukraine Could Harm Ukrainian Children

EveryChild, the international children's charity, is concerned to learn that Elton John is planning to adopt a child from an orphanage in Ukraine. Whilst Elton John should be applauded for helping to raise awareness of the plight of children affected by HIV in Ukraine, the answer to Ukraine's deepening HIV and Aids crisis does not lie in international adoption. More children may be abandoned in children's homes as a result of another high-profile, celebrity adoption

EveryChild is pleased to announce that the UN Human Rights Council has adopted an important resolution which affects the UN guidelines on alternative care for children. Global recession is increasing the number of children being abandoned, trafficked and exploited, warns EveryChild

Today, on the UN International Day of the Family (Friday), international development charity EveryChild is warning that the global recession is leading to more children being abandoned, trafficked and exploited across the world. As food becomes scarcer, parents face unemployment and families become desperate, children are leaving their homes and schools to find work. Some children are migrating away from families, some are trafficked and many are abandoned into orphanages. At the same time governments are cutting their already limited support for child care and child protection services.
